“Die Repräsentation als Wirklichkeit”

Galerie Metro is pleased to present “Die Repräsentation als Wirklichkeit” (“Representation as Reality”), a solo-exhibition of the artist Mario Asef. Two new works, “Raumschiff” (“Space Shuttle”) and “Raumvorstellung / 12792” (“Imagination of Space / 12792”) will be shown, among others.

“Die Repräsentation als Wirklichkeit” takes the abstract mathematical space as its starting point in order to approach the reality of the exhibition space. In mathematics, space is a quantity described by a certain structure. However, there is no definition for „space“ that is valid in all fields of mathematics. The term has different meanings in different mathematical sub-categories, each standing for single aspects of our perception of space. The space experienced on a daily basis is the so-called 3-dimensional Euclidean space. In the exhibition “Die Repräsentation als Wirklichkeit”, Mario Asef investigates the relationship of the mathematically imagined space and the real experienced space.

The sound installation “Raumschiff” can be heard from behind the gallery wall: an acoustic translation of diagrams, which depict electromagnetic earth frequencies suggesting the endless universe beyond that gallery wall. Triggered by fantasy, the exhibition space is turned into a space shuttle while the gallery wall borders infinity. As infinity is boundless, however, both the notion of the gallery bordering infinity and the assumed border between reality and fantasy is rendered absurd.

“Raumvorstellung / 12792” is comprised of an empty glass vitrine on a white pedestal. As an object in the exhibition space it attracts the viewer’s attention creating a kind of pull. Asef’s intention is not simply to play with the viewer’s expectation, but to explore expectation as the driving force for the creation of space through leading both movement and gaze. In being an empty display, “Raumvorstellung / 12792” also presents a duplication of the empty exhibition space.

Mario Asef was born in 1971 in Córdoba, Argentina; he currently lives and works in Berlin, Germany. He studied at the University for Architecture and Urban Development Córdoba, the Akademie der Bildenden Künste Karlsruhe, the Chelsea College of Art and Design in London and at the UdK Berlin.
